  • 29 May 2015

This week we had the honor of judging webpages and videos designed by participants in the Munster Programming Training. Special George Boole prizes were awarded for Programming, Webpage Design and Video Editing.

Special Boole prizes were awarded this week for outstanding application of George Boole’s theories. The talented young students from Munster Training Programming (MPT) were recognised for innovative work in video, web design and programming at the annual graduation and prize giving.

Surrounded by family, friends, teachers and mentors over 100 students from the age of ten received their certificates from Prof John O'Halloran, UCC VP for Teaching and Learning. Special Guests on the day included Ronan Murphy, Smarttech CEO and Chairman of IT@Cork and Jennifer Murphy, Head of UCC Admissions.

MPT runs classes throughout the academic year teaching young people form the age of 10 complex computer skills in a fun and challenging way. Many of the tutors have themselves come through the MPT programme and are now Computer Science PhD candidates in UCC. Their input is especially important as you see the clear pathway from early start programming to the future of the digital world.

Run by Dr Sabin Tabirca of UCC’s Computer Science department, MPT’S aim is to reach out to young people and provide the opportunity to explore the world of computer programming, web design, image production and flash design, the course is inspirational for all those involved.

As this is the year UCC celebrated George Boole, the university’s first Professor of Mathematics and the inventor of Boolean logic one of the tasks the young students had was to create a video about Boole. The 18 student videos are available here on the UCCMPT 2015 playlist.
